Dear Emma,
I do not know how to start this. I feel so small writing it. My husband and I opened our marriage. I thought it would be fine. I thought we were strong enough. We were not. He found another woman. He is with her the way your site talks about a wife and her bull. Only it is him. And I do not find it hot. Not even a little. It just hurts. His passion went to her. All of it. The way he used to look at me. The way he used to reach for me. That is gone. Now he looks at me like a housemate. Like someone who shares the bills and the couch. The spark is dead. At least it feels dead. I want more than anything the us we used to be. I know with him it starts and ends in the bedroom. Touch is how he loves. Connection is how he stays. I want to give him that again. I do. I am still here. But he thinks I left. He is looking for that feeling somewhere else. I never really left. I just pulled back when his fire moved to her. He left first. Then I left too. And the whole thing faded into this roommate life. It is terrible. It wrecks my self esteem every single day. I regret opening our marriage. There is not a day I do not. I want my soulmate back. I know he is still in there. I just need him to see that I am here too. That I never stopped wanting him. That I can be the one who meets him in that place of touch and heat again. How do I get a real relationship back, Emma? How do I bring the spark home when he has already poured it into someone else? I am tired and sad. But I am not done. I still believe we can find our way back if he will let me close again. I miss him so much.
Jessamine
Dear Jessamine,
I read your letter twice and sat with it and it made me feel a little ache in my chest, because what you wrote is not small even though you may feel small right now. You opened your marriage. He found another woman. His passion went to her. You are left in the house with a man who used to be your lover and now feels like a roommate and nesting partner. You do not find his outside sex hot. You find it hollow. You regret the open door almost every day. And yet still you want him. You want your soulmate back. You want him to choose you and you want to feel safe to choose him again. Tough love first. I am going to be honest with you in the way I try to be honest with every woman who writes me. Soft honesty. Clear honesty. Not cruel, but not sugar-coated either.
Your relationship may very well be dead.
Not “on pause.” Not “going through a phase.” Not “it’s complicated.” But dead. That is something you need to come to terms with before you try to save anything. If you skip that step, every effort you make will be frantic, desperate, and easy for him to smell as panic. Men can feel desperation and it will push him away. Coming to terms with “this might be over” is not the same as giving up. It is the opposite. It is clearing the fog so you can see what is actually in front of you. A last-ditch effort only works when you are willing to hear any answer that may come of it, including no.
You did not go into much detail about what your sex life looked like before you opened your marriage. I am going to gently flag that, Jessamine, because I imagine you opened for a reason. Was the sex thinning out? Were you bored? Was he bored? Did one of you bring up non-monogamy as a “fix” for something that was already cracking? Did he initiate that conversation? Did you? Did you think openness would create spark, or did you think it would relieve sexual pressure? Did you say yes because you were afraid of saying no?
I wrote about this in Identify the Motivations Behind Your Non-Monogamy and if you do not know the why, it will be difficult to find the how for what you are trying to close, heal, or rebuild. Motivation is the root. Everything else is the part of the plant that you can see above the ground but what you really need to access is that root below the surface and the motivation is that root. If you want to expand on what your dynamic looked like before the open door, frequency, initiation, who wanted what, who pulled away first I may be able to fine tune my response a little more in the comments or possibly with a followup piece. Right now I am only feeling the shape of your pain and not the full map of your marriage. Even with that, there is no single answer that fits every relationship. Some couples are polyamorous and thrive. Some are cuckold couples and thrive. Many are monogamous and thrive. Some try the open road, hit a wall, and come home wiser. Some try the open road and never find the house again. You see clearly that you are in the danger zone of that last category. Let us talk about why and what you can still do.
The Reverse Cuckold
On this site I spend a lot of time talking about female-led energy, hotwife and cuckold dynamics, and what happens when a wife becomes the bright center of sexual gravity. That structure has a pattern. When it works, the husband’s attention often intensifies toward his wife because her desire becomes scarce, elevated, watched, and charged. His sexual supply lines run directly through her and even when another man is in the picture. Men are wired that way, despite some or all of her needs being met elsewhere – she is still the sun shining a sexual brightness that he can’t look away from.
What you have is the opposite and I need to say this plainly for you and for everyone reading. Fully open relationships where the husband pours his sexual enthusiasm into another woman do not usually invert into a hot cuckquean sexual fantasy. More often they end exactly how you described. He fixates. He categorizes. He moves his best energy to the brightest light in the room. You become the reliable one. The home base. The emotionally safe roommate with history and logistics. That is not a kink for most women, it is grief, morning a loss and depression.
No shade on you, Jessamine. You are not weak for hating this. You are not “bad at non-monogamy” because you do not get wet watching your husband light up for someone else. A lot of women discover too late that the fantasy brochure and the lived reality are different animals. I have written about closing doors after they open in Once the Door to an Open or Cuckold Relationship Is Opened, Can It Ever Truly Be Closed? and sometimes it is possible, but only with brutal honesty and a rebuild that looks forward at a future of separation as motivation to ignite the present. It will be tough and it may require an enthusiasm you may not fully feel yet, enthusiasm will take practice before it feels real again and it will require giving without any guarantee of getting and you need to be ok with that.
He Recategorized You
I need you to read (or reread) Accept and Embrace Your Role as His Sexual Supply. Not because you should reduce yourself to a sexual vending machine but because that post is about the uncomfortable truth about male sexual and emotional fixation cycle. In a bonded relationship, men need you to be his primary source of sexual supply to feel safety and love. Sex is not the whole marriage but for most men and you already said this about your husband the emotional bridge is built out of physical charge. When the charge leaves, the bridge feels empty, unsafe and uncertain even though it is still physically present. Physically present with an absent charge is likely worse than being physically absent. At least if he was absent, he could imagine that charge still exists.
In my piece about sexual supply, I talk about sexual economics, objectification inside of your loving bond, and what happens when familiarity kills the “I want to use your body as the object of my affection” and to deepen the safety and connection in our relationship. Healthy couples learn to re-invite that heat intentionally with purpose. They tease. They dress up. She makes herself the supply that is absolutely irresistible to him, thus creating demand which makes them feel alive instead of assumed.
He is getting his sexual energy met elsewhere. Yours needs to be focused at him.
Not at the unfairness of the situation. Not at the other woman. Not at the depression, resentment or regret that you feel. Your sexual energy needs to be focused openly at him. He needs to feel desired by you specifically, not feel the weight of projecting the negative emotions. He needs you to send a very loud signal to him that he is still your erotic choice.
Men are excellent at categorizing relationships. You know how a woman can friend-zone a man? He can do the same thing back and worse. It sounds like he has friend-zoned you. Perhaps he has no-zoned you. You are no longer filed under “sexual possibility.” You are filed under home, history, logistics, bills, kids but you are not a source of getting his sexual hunger met. Once a man no-zones a partner, he can be oddly kind about it. Polite. Even affectionate in a roommate way. That kindness can confuse you and even send mixed messages and leave you waiting for a spontaneous miracle. The honest truth is that spontaneous already left the building with his passion and packed a bag.
This is not about magically shifting his attention back to you overnight. This is about reminding him or revealing to him that you want his attention. That you want him. That you crave his body. That he is good enough for you. That you want him to feel with you the charge he is getting from the other woman. You gave it to him once. You can offer it again. Whether he receives it is the test.
In Sex Hack: The Relationship Sexual Cycle Rewired, I wrote that relationship energy and sexual energy are not wired to the same system. You can love someone and not ache for them. You can ache for someone and not be able to build a life with them. This is like bull energy in a cuckold relationship, you can love your husband and feel an erotic charge with a bull but never in a million years see yourself building a life with your bull. That means re-engaging his body first so his mind has a reason to feel safe to re-open to emotional connection. For a lot of men, emotional reopening follows physical interest and not the other way around. He wants to see a glimmer of sexual connection. He wants to feel desired and while words help, touch shows.
We Are Not Evolving Your Man
Today we are not evolving your man, we are evolving you. Honestly very little of what I write about on this site is solely about evolving him and is most often learning about who you are together, the psychological motivations behind why we do what we do. It’s like behavioral economics for your relationship and you need to change your mindset from that of a broken, defeated woman to a person who is sexually capable and sexually interesting. Not interesting as performance art. Interesting as in alive in her want, clear in her aim and willing to risk the embarrassment of unrequited desire.
At this point, what do you have to lose by putting yourself out there and telling him you crave him more than any other? If he says no, truly no, repeatedly no, dead-eyed no and resists your advances then you have your answer. Clarity is a gift even though it can be painful and worst case, you have a clear understanding that it is time to move on. Best case, his body remembers yours and over time a pathway back to intimacy shows itself.
I have helped some cuckold couples close their dynamic back down. While those have been opposite of yours with a cuckold male, the pattern that works is almost always the same in spirit. When a cuckold husband pours back into his wife the kind of attentive, hungry, worshipful energy that she was getting from others, she often softens and returns herself to a version of what he needs. Attention answers attention. Your version is flipped, but the engine is similar. He is full elsewhere. You cannot empty her out of him by crying harder. You can only become a brighter, safer, hotter signal. You have the benefit of being at home, with him, a position she may envy.
Micro-Advances, Not Grand Speeches
If you want monogamy back, there is a road. It is not a highway. It is a footpath through brush that widens to a road over time. Start small. Do not kick down the bedroom door with a manifesto about closing the marriage on night one. First rebuild the category in his head from “housemate” to “woman who desires me.”
Night One
Ask him something simple. Low pressure.
Something like:
“I miss physical touch right now, can I touch you for a while tonight? You don’t have to do anything back. I just want to lay in bed and put my hands on you.”
Then do only that. Chest. Back. Arms. Scalp. Nothing below the belt. The kind of slow loving touch that says your body is still home to me. Do not slide into a full seduction campaign or get pouty if he is awkward. Do not turn it into a talk about the other woman or make it about you by asking if he still finds you attractive. That question is a panic button.
Just make him feel loving touch from you. Offer not too much. Start with touching. End with touching. Leave him wanting more but let the moment be complete on its own. Tell him that you enjoyed touching his body but don’t put pressure on him to tell you that he enjoyed it. He didn’t stop you, so take that as confirmation that he liked it. The more you ask, the more you risk shutting him down.
Why so small? Because he has written you off as sexual supply. If you suddenly perform a whole seduction scene, his brain may reject it as strategy or he might overthink. Tiny nuggets of authenticity are much easier to digest than an entire meal.
Night Two
The next night or a few nights later if he needs space, suggest touching again. This time asking if you can touch below the belt, remember to ask him for consent but ask him in a way that is clear that you want to do it.
With your hand on his waistband say “I’d love to touch the rest of your body. May I?”
If he says no, don’t take it as outright rejection. He may not be ready for this big of a step right away, repeat what you did the previous night. If he says yes, don’t stroke seeking orgasm, touch him with admiration and intimacy. He can be done at any time and so can you. There is no pressure and no expectation, just touch.
Night Three
On night three, do what you did on night two but perhaps offer one clear step further.
“I would really love to taste you. I just want you in my mouth. I miss you that way. No pressure to return it.”
He may turn you down. He may not. Be prepared for either one.
If he says yes, stay in the spirit of gift, not transaction. Enthusiasm without scorekeeping. You are not buying intimacy with oral sex. You are reintroducing yourself as a source of pleasure and want. You are showing that you can desire him and he can receive that desire.
If he says no, do not detonate. A calm “Okay. I’m still glad I asked. I just wanted to show you that I want you that hasn’t changed” is a thousand times more powerful than tears in the hallway. Make him feel safe to respond in a way that feels authentic to the way he feels.
You are not “tricking” him back. You are running a clean experiment to learn if he can be comfortable receiving desire from you again. Simultaneously you lean if you can offer desire even if it is not mirrored. Ultimately you learn if there is any life left in your physical connection. This is about getting him physically interested enough to re-engage his mind for an emotional connection. Body first. Meaning second. For touch-driven men, that order matters.
Mindset Work
Practical steps fail if your inner monologue is still defeat. So here is the inner mindset work that matches what you are showing him externally.
Apologize for the past without erasing yourself
“I don’t think I always knew what I wanted when we opened things. I retreated when your passion shifted. I left in my own way after you left in yours. I regret how far we drifted. I want you. Not as a roommate. As my person.”
Notice what that does not say. It does not say the other woman is trash. It does not demand he dump her tonight as proof of love. It does not rewrite history so you were only a victim. It owns your retreat. It names your want. That combination is adult. Adult is sexy even when it is sad.
Make him feel like your person, not your option
Do things that remove “option” energy by speaking to him in future tense in small ways: we, us, next month, that trip, that plan. Praise specific things about his body and presence out loud. Men are often starved for clean, non-sarcastic desire language. Choose him in micro-moments, sit closer, initiate the goodbye kiss like it means something, text something filthy-sweet in the middle of the day with no agenda except I thought of your mouth. Send him sexy memes or things from your past that show him you desire physical and emotional intimacy. Reject the idea of other men while you are trying to regain his attention and stop auditioning as the “cool open-relationship wife” if that role is slowly killing you inside. Remind him he is your one and only in your nervous system before you request that he be exclusive with you again. Demands and ultimatums will push him away, just show him love and desire without expectation.
Give openly without demanding anything in return
This part is hard, especially with your self-esteem on the floor. I know. Your job in this last-ditch window is to offer sexual and sensual energy without requiring immediate equal payment. Not forever. Not as a new lifelong martyrdom kink. As a strategic, time-bound posture of abundance while you test for life in the bond. Do not let every non-mirror moment become a story called See, I am unlovable. Sometimes it is only a story called He is still oriented elsewhere and this will take repetitions. Sometimes it is He is gone. You will only know by staying steady long enough to collect real data about where he is. Is it worth saving? Is he worth holding on to? If you give up now, will you regret not expending the energy later?
In the sexual supply framework, you are trying to become not merely a willing source of sexual supply again, but an enthusiastic one. Willing is polite. Enthusiastic is memorable. Enthusiastic is the bright light. If you can make yourself shine, he may turn his face toward that light. He may not. Both outcomes end the roommate horror in different ways. One rebuilds the marriage. The other releases you from a slow emotional death.
Closing the Door, If the Wire Is Still Live
Suppose your micro-advances work. Suppose he starts responding, kissing back, reaching for you, looking a little stunned that you are still erotic and available. Then, and only then you can graduate from physical reintroduction into relationship redesign.
That is where the guidance in my closing-the-door piece matters because the heart-to-heart conversation, evaluating needs, defining boundaries, handling outside connections with realism rather than revenge, and rebuilding the primary bond on purpose. You cannot skip from a blowjob to “delete her number and we are monogamous forever” without a chapter in the middle. The middle chapter is consistent desire, safer emotional climate, and a man who once again experiences you as supply and partner and chosen woman. He needs to feel you show up for him and he needs to feel like you will consistently choose him. That takes time and it takes effort. Is he worth the time? Is he worth the effort? What do you have to lose by not trying? Him. You have him to lose.
Also beware of fake wins. If he sleeps with you out of guilt while his real hunger stays outside, you will feel it. Don’t push for sex too early, push for a huge heaping pile of those small wins. Guilt sex is not soulmate sex. You are looking for hunger. Hunger has a different face.
Some couples who “close” do not return to pristine pre-open monogamy. They return to something more conscious called monogamish, monogamous with scars, monogamous with better sex talks, monogamous with therapy. The goal is not to time-travel. The goal is to stop living as roommates.
Be Honest About Sexual Value
Jessamine, be real with yourself when you answer this question. Which of you has more sexual value in this relationship right now? Not who is nicer. Not who is right. Who is more desired. Who carries more heat. Is he higher on that totem pole than you?
When you got together, were you equals or maybe you were hotter? More wanted? Did he work harder to win you than you did to win him? A lot of women start as the prize and then coast on that old story for years. That story may be over. As you enter this repair phase, you may need to actually show up for him in ways that he showed up for you early-on.
This may have come full circle. You both grew. The balance shifted. If he is the one getting fresh desire elsewhere, you do not get to sit back and wait for fairness to save you. You put in the work now. More effort. More initiation. More clear want. Not as humiliation, but as reality.
This is not me calling you unattractive. It is me telling you to stop feeling entitled to yesterday’s leverage in today’s marriage. If he has more options energy right now, you need to chase better, flirt harder and touch in the ways that mean the most to him. You make it impossible for him to keep filing you under housemate. If you were once the catch, act like someone who intends to be chosen again. Soft nostalgia will not move him but honest effort might.
A Warning for Everyone Else
Jessamine’s letter should be pinned to the fridge of every couple casually discussing a “fully open” marriage like it is a weekend hobby. Men fixate on women as a source of sexual supply that feels bright, validating, and easy compared to the complex history of a long-term partner. They pour enthusiasm into the brightest light in the room. If that light is not you, you will feel the cold even if nobody is cruel.
Cuckold dynamics, in the female-centered direction. The type that I normally talk about keep the wife as the gravitational sexual center. When the husband is the prize, with the wife waiting at home, it usually ends like this with eroded intimacy, collapsed self-esteem, and a woman writing to me in a small brave voice asking how to get her person back. Men and women are not wired the same. That does not make non-monogamy evil. It makes structure, motivation, and asymmetry a serious consideration. If you open, know which way the energy is designed to flow. If you do not like the flow, don’t sign up because you are afraid of being “the boring wife.” Boring and broken are different. You are allowed to want monogamy. You are allowed to want your husband to look at you like you are the event.
A Heart To Heart
Your letter said you never really left but you retreated when his passion shifted. I believe you. I also believe retreat and departure can look identical from his side of the bed especially if you have expressly if over the course of this open marriage you’ve chosen someone else over him the way he is choosing his girlfriend over you. If you want his heart back you are going to have to reappear in the languages he speaks fluently as a man; touch, desire and choice.
You can’t show up as a defeated roommate begging for scraps. You need to show up for him as a woman who still knows how to want her husband out loud.
I am optimistic about effort, Jessamine and I am not naive about outcomes. There is a last-ditch path to ease him back into seeing you as not only a willing source of sexual supply but an enthusiastic one. If you can shine, he may see the shine. If he does not, you will have done the bravest thing available by showing him your truth. Worst case, your courage will result in you not lying to yourself that a housemate arrangement is a marriage. You deserve a real relationship, with him if he can meet you, or with a future that is not emotionally empty if he cannot. I am rooting for you and I know that softness and confidence is the combination that will bring you and hopefully your marriage back to life. Your letter hits me in the heart strings of a woman that went into a relationship dynamic with the best of intentions but lost the thing most valuable to her in the process.
Love,
Emma ❤️

Emma, I know that i am critical of many of the things you advocate for and support. That being said, I think this one of the, if not the best blog I’ve read of yours. I don’t think the mentioning of cuckolding was necessary, but still really good stuff.
I want more than anything the us we used to be.
I was wondering how long before a woman told her story of cuckolding from the other side of the fence. Very sorry your feelings are hurt princess, but this exactly how your husband or B/F feels, knowing you’re banging another man. On top of that, you weren’t locked in a chastity devise, pegged, induced to suck the other woman’s excrement off his penis, and spanked by his lady lover whenever you stepped out of line. Cuckolding is a spicy little fantasy, but it destroys far more marriages than it enriches. Wake up and smell the coffee!
